Her new husband abandoned her with a pregnancy

She has been trying to survive with her four children in Nakivale camp in Uganda since 2016. J.K says her second husband left without saying goodbye to him.

He was her second husband because the 30-year-old Burundian says her first husband was murdered by youth from the ruling party, CNDD-FDD, in Burundi in 2016 before she decided to take refuge in Uganda. J.K explains that she left the country with a child and according to her a friend helped her to get her two other children. “After I picked up my children, there was a man who promised to help me. He built me a house. He convinced me that we can live together. After he got me pregnant, this man abandoned me ".

J.K has now a 1 year and 6 month old baby. Her three other children are respectively 16, 14 and 8 years old. J.K deplores the fact that she cannot afford to pay for their studies. “Life has become complicated. I can't even afford to pay for my children's education. They dropped out of school".

This Burundian refugee from Nakivale asks benefactors to grant her capital to start an income-generating activity. "If I start a business, I could be able to pay for studies for my children", she says.

Like J.K, several women find it difficult to survive in the Nakivale refugee camp after being abandoned by their husbands. After the assassination of their husbands during the 2015 crisis in Burundi, these women find themselves without resources in the Nakivale refugee camp in Uganda, which hosts 48,274 Burundians according to figures given by UNHCR as of July 31, 2020.
